Description

In front of signals in Germany, the track magnets of the PZB train protection system lie beside the rail. This set contains today's design in two lengths: the long single magnet (500 Hz) and the short magnet, which exists as a double magnet (1000/2000 Hz) and as a switching magnet with the same outer size.

  • Dimensions from the data sheet of the current design (680 and 860 mm long).
  • Flat underside to glue onto sleepers or ballast, to the right of the rail in the direction of travel; no holder at the rail foot, so it suits any track.
  • No logo and no type plate, only the housing shape, ready to paint.

In the set per scale:

  • double magnet 1000/2000 Hz and switching magnet: prototype 680 × 186 × 155 mm (L × W × H); N 4.25 × 1.16 × 0.97 mm, TT 5.67 × 1.55 × 1.29 mm, H0 7.82 × 2.14 × 1.78 mm
  • single magnet 500 Hz: prototype 860 × 186 × 155 mm (L × W × H); N 5.38 × 1.16 × 0.97 mm, TT 7.17 × 1.55 × 1.29 mm, H0 9.89 × 2.14 × 1.78 mm
  • The collection plate holds one 500 Hz magnet and two short magnets (1000/2000 Hz and switching magnet).

Scales: One variant per scale: N (resin only), TT (1:120) and H0 (1:87). There is no Z: the magnet would be only 0.7 mm high there. Each variant contains the single parts and a collection plate with all parts of the scale (3 mm apart).

Dimensions: Prototype dimensions from data sheet for PZB track magnets, type GWT, edition 11/2021, divided by the scale. The chamfered top edges are a simplified shape, not a dimension from the data sheet. How high the prototype magnet sits above the rail foot is not clear from the data sheet, so the dummy simply stands on the sleeper or ballast. How accurate it turns out depends on your printer, and our part has not been tested on a layout yet. Print the free check gauge first to see in advance whether clearance and distances suit your setup.

Material: Resin recommended, the parts are small to scale; the stated print time and resin amount are an estimate for resin at 0.05 mm layers on a common MSLA printer. In H0 and TT, FDM in PLA with a 0.2 mm nozzle and 0.08 mm layers also works. With resin: wear gloves, follow the resin manufacturer's instructions and cure the parts fully.

Material and temperature

PLA is enough for gauges and structural parts (0.4 mm nozzle). For small details use resin or a 0.2 mm nozzle. With resin: wear gloves, follow the resin manufacturer's instructions and cure the parts fully.

Print orientation: Resin: tilted by about 30–45° on light supports. FDM: Lying on the underside.

Uncured resin is an irritant: wear nitrile gloves, ventilate well, follow the resin manufacturer’s instructions and fully post-cure the parts.

Printing

  1. Resin, 0.05 mm layers: tilt the single parts by about 30–45° in the resin slicer and add light supports, on undersides and backs rather than visible faces.
  2. After printing, wash the parts (cleaner as specified by the resin manufacturer), remove the supports and post-cure them fully under UV light.
  3. FDM (H0, TT): PLA, 0.2 mm nozzle, 0.08 mm layers, no supports, as the files are laid out.

Installation

  1. Paint, then fix with a little glue to the right of the rail on the sleeper or ballast.

FAQ

Which material should I use for this model railway accessory?

Recommended: Resin (alternatively PLA). PLA is enough for gauges and structural parts (0.4 mm nozzle). For small details use resin or a 0.2 mm nozzle. With resin: wear gloves, follow the resin manufacturer's instructions and cure the parts fully.

Do I receive a printed part?

No. You get the print files and print the part yourself or use a print service. You get the download link right after payment.

Where are the magnets on the prototype?

To the right of the rail in the direction of travel: the 1000 Hz magnet at the distant signal, the 2000 Hz magnet at the main signal and the 500 Hz magnet usually about 250 m before the main signal. The double magnet covers 1000 and 2000 Hz in one housing.

Resin or FDM?

Resin recommended, the parts are small to scale; the stated print time and resin amount are an estimate for resin at 0.05 mm layers on a common MSLA printer. In H0 and TT, FDM in PLA with a 0.2 mm nozzle and 0.08 mm layers also works. With resin: wear gloves, follow the resin manufacturer's instructions and cure the parts fully.

Does the part carry current or work?

No. Nothing in this range carries current; detail parts are dummies.
