Curve clearance gauge – widening by radius and vehicle group A, B, C, Z, N, TT, H0

Description

In curves, long vehicles swing out with their body and ends and need more room than on straight track. The standard gives a widening per radius and vehicle group. Look up your radius and the longest vehicles you run in the list, and print the matching gauge.

• One gauge per widening: in H0 E = 1 to 12 mm, fewer in Z, N and TT.
• Groups A, B, C from the vehicle standard: A up to 14 m, B up to 17.2 m, C up to 19.5 m bogie pivot distance (prototype).
• Table values only: radii for which the standard gives no value are not interpolated.
• Rests on the rails like the straight check gauge.

In the set per scale:

• Z (group radius in mm): E 1 → A 250–350, B 325–450, C 450–600; E 2 → A 175–225, B 225–300, C 325–400; E 3 → A 140, B 175–200, C 250–300; E 4 → B 140, C 200–225; E 5 → C 175

• Where the table gives 0, the straight clearance gauge applies; where it gives nothing, the radius is below the minimum radius.

Scales: One variant per scale: Z (1:220), N (1:160), TT (1:120) and H0 (1:87). Each variant contains the single parts and a collection plate with all parts of the scale (3 mm apart).

Dimensions: Dimensions taken from NEM 103 (2024 edition), NEM 102 (2019 edition) and NEM 301 (2024 edition). The widening applies per side, on the outside and inside of the curve. How accurate it turns out depends on your printer, and our part has not been tested on a layout yet. Print the free check gauge first to see in advance whether clearance and distances suit your setup.

Material: PLA is enough because the layout stays indoors; PETG works too. 0.4 mm nozzle, ideally 0.12 mm layers, no supports.

Material and temperature

PLA is enough for gauges and structural parts (0.4 mm nozzle). For small details use resin or a 0.2 mm nozzle. With resin: wear gloves, follow the resin manufacturer's instructions and cure the parts fully.
