VW Golf 3 / Vento: an extra gauge in the accessory switch slot, no drilling
Where can I fit an extra gauge in a VW Golf 3 without drilling?
In a free accessory switch slot below the heater and fan controls. A pod plugs in there in place of the blank cap with a hollow plug with crush ribs and holds one 52 mm gauge flush – for example oil temperature on a VR6 or boost on a TDI. It fits the Golf 3 (1H, 1991–1997) including GTI, VR6, TDI, Variant and Vento; on the Cabrio (1E) it is not confirmed.

How the pod sits
Below the Golf 3’s heater and fan controls there are slots for accessory switches, closed with blank caps when no switch is fitted. In place of a blank cap goes a hollow plug with crush ribs, and in front of it sits the pod with one 52 mm gauge flush. Crush ribs hold the gauge without screws, and the cable runs through the plug behind the console.

The slot is only 27 mm tall, so the pod sits in front of the console and protrudes by the depth of the gauge. Pick the variant by gauge depth (45, 50 or 55 mm).
Which Golfs fit
- Designed for: Golf 3 (1H, 1991–1997) with GTI, VR6, TDI, GT and Variant, plus the Vento.
- Not confirmed: Golf 3 Cabrio (1E).
What is tested and what isn’t
Our pod has not yet been tested in a Golf 3. The slot size comes from a freely published model measured off the original part (zazaw1zard, Printables 1080985, CC BY 4.0); only the dimensions were taken over. Unlike the original cap, our pod is held by friction only, not by spring fingers. If the plug is too tight, file the crush ribs a little; if it is too loose, add felt tape. The tolerance test ring shows whether your printer hits the 52.79 mm gauge bore.
Safety
The slot sits below the heater controls, clear of the airbag zones; the passenger airbag (standard from 1995) is in the top of the dashboard. The pod must not obstruct the gear lever or heater controls – check in every gear. Always use a fused power supply.
Printing
The pod prints face down on the bed, so the visible side comes out smooth and no supports are needed. PETG is enough here, ASA or ABS also work, PLA does not (PETG or ASA in a car). It weighs 68 g and takes about 5 hours.
Fitting the gauge pod in a Golf 3 accessory slot
- Print the tolerance test ring or fit test set in the final material and test-fit the gauge.
- Print the pod in PETG or ASA (face down on the bed, no supports).
- Lever the blank cap out of a free slot below the heater controls.
- Route the cable through the groove into the plug and behind the console, press the gauge in from the front.
- Push the pod straight into the slot until it sits flush; check the gear lever and heater controls in every gear.
FAQ
Which slot is the right one?
Any free slot with a blank cap below the heater and fan controls. Fitted switches stay where they are.
Will it hold a heavy gauge?
The pod is held only by the crush ribs, not by spring fingers like the original cap. It is meant for normal electric 52 mm gauges; we have not tested whether it holds a heavy mechanical gauge securely on bad roads. Check it is secure before driving.
Which gauges make sense?
For example oil temperature on a VR6 and boost on a TDI. Any gauge with a 52 mm body fits, as long as its depth matches the chosen variant. Fit sender and wiring following the gauge maker's instructions.
Does it fit the Golf 3 Cabrio?
Not confirmed. We have not checked whether the Cabrio (1E) has the same slots. Measure the slot first (about 39 × 27 mm).
Why does the pod stick out from the console?
The slot is only 27 mm tall, so a 52 mm gauge does not fit inside. Only the plug sits in the slot; the pod with the gauge sits in front of it and protrudes by the gauge depth.
