52 mm or 60 mm: which gauge size fits the pod?

What is the difference between 52 mm and 60 mm gauges?

52 mm (exactly 52.39 mm = 2-1/16 inch) is the most common size for aftermarket gauges like boost or oil temperature. 60 mm gauges are easier to read, but often have only a 60 mm bezel on a 52 mm housing – they then fit a 52 mm pod as long as the bezel can rest on the front.

The 52 mm standard

Almost every gauge maker builds in 52 mm – a housing diameter of 2-1/16 inch, i.e. 52.39 mm. Off-the-shelf pods are often too tight: buyers report sanding the bore, especially with thick bezels.

Our pods therefore have a 52.79 mm bore. The bezel rests on a 1.5 to 2 mm ledge and is never enclosed.

60 mm: bigger, but not always different

60 mm gauges are easier to read. Many of them only have a 60 mm bezel while the housing stays at 52 mm. Such gauges fit a 52 mm pod if there is room for the wider bezel at the front. On dual and triple pods the spacing between the gauges limits the bezel; the maximum is listed on each product.

True 60 mm housings need their own pod. Some universal pods come with a dedicated 60 mm version (60.4 mm bore), starting with the dashboard pod; the product page shows whether one exists. For any other mounting spot we design a 60 mm pod as a custom design.

Larger formats

Tachometers and shift lights also come in 2-5/8 inch (about 67 mm) and larger. We design pods for those sizes on request.

FAQ

Why is the bore larger than 52 mm?

Printed holes usually come out slightly small, and many housings are a bit thicker than nominal. With 0.4 mm extra the gauge fits without sanding; every file comes with a tolerance test ring.

How do I measure my gauge?

Use calipers to measure two diameters: the housing right behind the bezel and the bezel itself. The housing sets the bore, the bezel sets the outer diameter of the pod.
