Gauge front ring sizes: which dual or triple pod fits?

Will my gauges fit side by side in a dual or triple pod?

Yes, if the outer diameter of the front ring is no larger than the centre-to-centre distance of the bores – otherwise the rings hit each other. According to its manual, a Defi 52 has a 58.3 mm front ring and a Defi 60 a 66.3 mm ring. Our dual and triple pods have centre distances from 55.5 to 124 mm; for wide front rings several car-specific panels have a “wide” variant with 59 mm spacing.

Defi 52
front ring Ø 58.3 mm (ADVANCE BF/CR manual)
Defi 60
front ring Ø 66.3 mm, body Ø 60 mm (ADVANCE BF/CR manual)
Rule
front ring Ø ≤ centre distance of the bores
Our spacing
55.5 to 124 mm, “wide” variant 59 mm (Astra G with three gauges 59.5 mm)
Bore
52.79 mm for 52 mm bodies, 60.4 mm for 60 mm bodies

Body or front ring?

A gauge has two dimensions that matter: the body, which sits in the bore, and the front ring, which rests on the front of the pod. For a single pod it is enough for the body to fit. As soon as two or three gauges sit side by side, the front ring decides: if it is wider than the distance between the bore centres, the rings hit each other and the gauges won’t both go in.

The rule is simple: front ring Ø ≤ centre distance. On our product pages this distance is given as “at most Ø … mm per gauge”.

Sourced ring sizes

For Defi there is a dimensioned drawing in the manual of the ADVANCE BF/CR series (Defi manual on manualsdir.com):

Gauge Body Front ring
Defi 52 52 mm Ø 58.3 mm
Defi 60 60 mm Ø 66.3 mm

“Gauge size” there means the body diameter. A Defi 60 is therefore not just bigger at the front; it needs a bore for a 60 mm body (60.4 mm in our parts). For other brands we have no sourced manufacturer data – please measure yourself.

Centre distances of our dual and triple pods

Product Gauges Centre distance = largest front ring Defi 52 (58.3 mm)
Panels for Volvo 240, VW Beetle, VW Polo 9N, VW T2 Bay, Opel Astra G 2 (Astra G also 3) 55.5 mm “wide” variant only (59 mm; Astra G with 3 gauges 59.5 mm)
Double-DIN flush panel 3 57 mm no
Mercedes W123 plate 2 58 mm “wide” variant only (59 mm)
VW T4 ashtray panel 2 58.5 mm yes, just
Single-DIN panel, Porsche 996 panel 2 or 3 59.5 mm yes, just
Dual cupholder pod, dual steering column pod (52 mm variant), triple dashboard pod 2 or 3 60.5 mm yes, just
Double-DIN flush panel 2 70 mm yes
Clio II dual pod 2 88.5 mm yes
Single-DIN panel with storage pocket 2 124 mm yes

The distances apply to the 52 mm variants. The “wide” variants of the car-specific panels (Volvo 240, Beetle, Polo 9N, T2, Astra G, W123) are made for 52 mm bodies; a Defi 60 does not fit them, however wide the spacing. Only the Polo 9N also has a dedicated version for a single 60 mm gauge. For a 60 mm body you need a variant with a 60.4 mm bore, as the MX-5 NA pod has, for example.

How to measure correctly

  1. Front ring: with calipers at its widest point, across the outside of the ring.
  2. Body: right behind the ring. It decides whether you need the 52 or the 60 mm bore.
  3. Gauge depth: is in the gauge’s datasheet; it sets the depth variant.

How accurately printed bores come out is shown by the tolerance test ring.

Common mistakes

  • Only the body measured: a gauge with a 52 mm body can have a ring of more than 58 mm.
  • “60 mm” misunderstood: with Defi it is the body, not just the ring.
  • Standard spacing too tight: at 55.5 or 58 mm spacing two Defi 52 gauges do not fit side by side – take the “wide” variant.
  • Rings touching although the numbers work: with 58.3 mm rings at 58.5 or 59.5 mm spacing there is hardly any room; push the gauges in straight without tilting them.

Checking whether two or three gauges fit side by side

  1. Measure the outer diameter of the front ring with calipers, at its widest point.
  2. Also measure the body right behind the ring: it sets the bore (52 or 60 mm).
  3. Check on the product page how large the front ring may be at most (= centre distance).
  4. If the ring is larger, take the “wide” variant where there is one, or choose a pod with more spacing.

FAQ

What is the front ring?

The ring around the gauge glass at the front, often chrome or black. It rests on the front of the pod and is wider than the body behind it.

Why doesn't a Defi 52 fit every dual panel?

Its front ring is 58.3 mm wide. If the bores are closer, for example 55.5 or 58 mm apart, the rings hit each other. For that, several car-specific panels have the “wide” variant with 59 mm spacing.

Is a 60 mm gauge only bigger at the front?

Not with Defi: according to the manual, “gauge size” means the body diameter. A Defi 60 therefore has a 60 mm body and needs a 60.4 mm bore; its front ring measures 66.3 mm. For other makers, please measure yourself.

What sizes do other brands have?

We have no sourced manufacturer data for them. Measure your gauge's front ring with calipers; dimensioned drawings in the maker's manual are the best source.

Is there a wide variant for every panel?

No. It exists where it fits the slot: on the panels for the Volvo 240, VW T2, VW Beetle, VW Polo 9N, Opel Astra G and Mercedes W123. For the others, the permitted front ring is on the product page.
